FAQs --Frequently Asked Questions about the lifespan Developmental Science Program

1. What can I do with a doctoral degree in Developmental Science?

Graduates may be employed:
  • in university, college, and community college settings as faculty members involved in teaching, research and community service

  • research settings within the government and/or private sector as research consultants or project directors, and in scientific management capacities

  • applied settings as practitioners and planners, and in other service implementation and evaluation capacities

2. Can I take graduate level classes at FIU without being admitted into the doctoral program?

Yes, if you pursue the Special Student classification.  Up to 9 graduate credits can be taken this way and counted toward the degree if a Special Student is subsequently admitted to the program.

3. How does one apply to become a Special Student?

In order to obtain the status of Special Student, you must go to The Office of Admissions (PC 140) and apply in person.

4. What courses should I take as a Special Student?

If you have not taken any undergraduate courses in developmental psychology, then you should consider taking some undergraduate courses (also, see 6. below).  You may also wish to take some graduate-level first-year courses.  Consult with a  program faculty member for additional information about becoming a Special Student and what specific courses to take.

5. I have a Masters degree from  another University. Will you accept my degree? What courses transfer?

It depends. Up to thirty credits (and a masters thesis) can be transferred in but your faculty advisor must approve them as part of your specific program of studies after you have been admitted.

6.  My bachelor's degree is not in Psychology. Can I still apply to the program?

Yes, you may apply for admission into the program provided you have satisfactorily completed specific courses. The program  requires that you complete one psychology laboratory or research methodology course or demonstrate competence in research methodology and that you also complete introductory statistics or demonstrate competence in statistics.   Consult with a  program faculty member for additional information about meeting this requirement.

7. I have taken graduate level courses at another University.  How many credits will transfer?
