Participation
in the Youth Development Project is
open to graduate students and undergraduate students at many levels
(detailed descriptions are provided below). The Project provides
opportunities for intern placement and research training with students in
the project participating at many levels of involvement. At the graduate
level, students in the Psychology Department’s Life Span Developmental
Science Doctoral Program may obtain research training in the process of
fulfilling academic requirements (e.g., Masters Thesis, Doctoral
Dissertations) as well as obtain supervision that can be accrued toward
fulfilling the licensure requirements for licensure as a mental health
counselor in the State of Florida. Students in the Psychology
Department’s Mental Health Research and Services Masters Degree Program
and other license eligible programs also obtain supervision that can be
accrued toward fulfilling the licensure requirements for the State of
Florida. At the undergraduate level, students may obtain both research and
intern experience by participating in research projects and in working in
counseling groups, conducting assessments and interviews, and other forms
of direct experience in working with the adolescents at the high schools.
Course credit is available for work done as part of the project as briefly
described below.
All Project Members also
participate in the organizational/administrative activities that support
the YDP. Graduate and undergraduates can participate in these
activities for credit (described below). [top]
The type of activities Interns
participate in include:
-
intervention activities (running
groups, participating in groups, assessment interviewing, etc.)
-
organizational/administrative
activities (coordination activities, data management, etc.).
Intern
& Research Sites
Interns and research trainees are
placed at public alternative high schools throughout Miami and greater
Miami Dade county. All supervised intern activities (e.g. the group
sessions, assessments, etc.) are conducted at the placement sites (i.e.,
the high schools). Research activities are conducted at the
placement sites and at the YDP Home Base at FIU. Interns and research
trainees are responsible for arranging transportation to the placement
sites and FIU. [top]
