About Professor Kurtines 

Professor Kurtines received his Ph.D. in psychology from The Johns Hopkins University. He is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Doctoral Program in Life-Span Developmental Science and Director of the Masters Program in Counseling Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Florida International University. He is currently the Director of the Youth Development Project in the Child and Family Psychosocial Research Center at FIU. Professor Kurtines has been a visiting faculty member in the Department of Psychology at University of Texas at Austin, in the School of Education at Harvard University, a Visiting Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Education and Human Development in Berlin, Germany, and a Visiting Professor at Kobe Shinwa Women's University, Kobe, Japan.  

Within the field of lifespan developmental science, Dr. Kurtines' areas of scholarly and research interest include social and personality development, positive development, and moral development across the life span. Within the field of applied developmental and intervention science, they include outreach research and the development of community supported psycho-social and psycho-educational positive development interventions across the lifespan. He has received many awards for his teaching and research, including the Award for Research Excellence from the Southeastern Psychological Association in 1978 and the award for Scholarship/Research Excellence from Florida International University in 1989, Award for Teaching Excellence, Florida International University in 1995, the Professorial Excellence Award, Florida International University in 1997, and he was elected a Fellow in the American Psychological Association (Div. 7) in 1995. Professor Kurtines has also been Investigator and/or Senior Research Scientist on many large grants funded by federal agencies such as NIDA, NIMH, and NIH.

Professor Kurtines has published many books and monographs including: 

·         Morality, Moral Behavior and Moral Devel­opment (Wiley, 1984) with J. L. Gewirtz which has been translated into Italian, Indonesian, and Japanese;

·         Moral Development Through Social Interaction (Wiley, 1987) with J. L. Gewirtz;

·         Breakthroughs in Family Therapy with Behavior Problem and Drug Abusing Youth (Springer, 1989) with J. Szapocznik;

·         Intersections with Attachment (Erlbaum, 1991) with J. L. Gewirtz;

·         Handbook of Moral Behavior and Development:  Theory, Research, and Application: Vols. 1-3 (Erlbaum, 1991) with J. L. Gewirtz;

·         The Role of Values in Psychology and Human Development (Wiley, 1991) with M. Azmitia and J. L. Gewirtz;

·         Moral Behavior and Development:  An Introduction (Allyn & Bacon, 1995) with J. L. Gewirtz;

·         Anxiety and Phobic Disorders:  A Pragmatic Approach (Plenum, 1997) with W. K. Silverman;
