Masters of Science in Psychology Degree Requirements

Students who are accepted to the Masters Program must meet the requirements outlined in this section.  To be awarded the Masters of Science in Psychology degree with a specialization in lifespan development students must complete at least 36 semester hours beyond the Bachelors degree as described below.
   

As part of the program of studies students:

  • complete core course requirements designed to facilitate a thorough grounding in research, theory, and methods across the lifespan

  • develop an area of specialization within or across the lifespan 

  • receive training in both basic and/or applied research in developmental science

The masters degree program is a terminal degree program designed for individuals desiring intermediate graduate level professional training in lifespan developmental science, either to further career goals or in preparation for doctoral level graduate study. All course work taken (and masters thesis completed)  as part of the M.S. in Psychology degree count toward fulfilling the Ph.D. in lifespan developmental science for students who successfully apply to transfer to the LDS Ph.D. Program. Application for Transfer to Ph.D. Program

Applications for transfer from a Masters Program (M.S. in Psychology) to the Lifespan Developmental Science Doctoral Program (Ph.D. in Psychology) are reviewed for acceptance by the Program Committee twice a year (August and December). Applications for transfer may be obtained from the graduate secretary.

Minimum requirements for transfer include:

  • Masters thesis proposal approved by the masters thesis committee
  • A letter from the chair of the thesis committee stating that they meet the standards for application to the Ph.D.
