The Annual FIU Holiday Celebration for Children was founded in
1992 by FIU’s Black Employees Association (BEA) whose mission was to provide
merriment to underprivileged children during the Holiday Season. Also, it
was an opportunity to expose children to a college environment and hopefully
plant a seed that would inspire them to do well in school and seek higher
education.
The success of this event over the years has been because of the
collaboration of the FIU and corporate communities. FIU volunteers from
every level in the University -- executives, administrators, faculty, staff
and students -- serve as volunteers and provide special services. Major
contributions from corporations and local businesses have been a blessing
and have brought so much joy to many children.
Perhaps what is so special about this event is that it gives us
a chance to come together as a community and share in the children’s
happiness -- reminding us that indeed it takes a village to raise a child.
Thank you for your continued support over the years.
CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP
Throughout
the year, children work on projects that stimulate academic growth,
creativity and social skills. A highlight of this event is watching the
children showcase their achievement with skits that include poetry, artwork,
dance and song. Computers are awarded to students for their efforts.
LUNCH
FIU
executives, deans, faculty, administrators, staff as well as sponsors and
special guests join the children and their teachers for a full course lunch
in the FIU Graham Center Ballroom that is specially decorated for the
occasion and to bring Holiday merriment to everyone attending.
WELCOME
FIU’s
President Mark Rosenberg and Executive Vice President Rosa Jones open the
ceremony by welcoming everyone to the event. Sponsors are introduced and
recognized for their contributions.
ENTERTAINMENT
Entertainment is designed for both children and adults to enjoy. Years past
have included performances by the children, FIU employees and students,
mascots from the Miami Heat, Dolphins, and Marlins. Emceeing is FIU’s
Felecia Townsend who delights the audience with her voice and stage
presence, and there is never a dull moment with the humor of Santa.
SCHOLARSHIP DRIVE
Adults
partake in a fun-filled scholarship drive for students to attend FIU. By
purchasing Santa grab bags, $3,000 is raised each year and awarded to
students based on merit and/or need. Those purchasing grab bags are
eligible to win grand prizes donated by sponsors.
CHILDREN’S
TOYSHOP
The
highlight of the ceremony ends with the children visiting the toyshop filled
with an array of gifts and each child receiving a bike.
