Library Collection Access Policy
  1. The Wolfsonian–FIU library houses a collection of reference materials, rare books, periodicals, and ephemeral items in a variety of formats that document the period 1885-1945. Because of the fragility of the rare books and primary resource materials in the collection, the library has a closed-stack policy, requested items being paged by library personnel.
  2. The library collection is open to researchers and may be consulted Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. with advanced notice. Scholars wishing to access the collection are encouraged to discuss their research projects with library personnel prior to visiting the institution. An appointment is required and may be obtained by contacting library staff via e-mail at: lucaf@fiu.edu or nick@thewolf.fiu.edu, or by phone at : 305.535.2640. Every effort will be made to accommodate the user's requested time.
  3. Access to the collection will be provided to the following researchers:
    Florida International University students, faculty, and staff;
    Florida State University System students, faculty, and staff;
    Florida researchers and residents;
    national and international scholars.
  4. All researchers must present to library staff proper identification with photograph (i.e., university identification card, driver's license, or passport). Researchers must complete a Registration Form, and read and sign a Rules Governing Use of Collection document.
  5. The collection is made accessible through an on-line public access catalog. Researchers are allowed unfettered access to all ready reference materials, (i.e., dictionaries, encyclopedias, modern periodicals located on shelves in the main reading room). Rare books, periodicals, and ephemeral items are housed in closed stacks and will be paged by library staff. All library materials are to be consulted in reading rooms under library staff supervision and may not circulate beyond the designated research areas.
  6. Researchers are limited to consulting five items at a time, although they will be permitted to request other items after their initial requests have been returned and reshelved. Postcards, advertisements, and other ephemeral items housed together in one box may be treated as a single item request. Items may be placed on reserve for agreed upon periods of time.
  7. No library materials item may be altered or damaged in any way. Access may be denied to any researcher, if mishandling or inappropriate use of the collection is noted.
