![]() Book, Depero Futurista [also known as the bolted book], 1927 Designed and written by Fortunato Depero Published by Dinamo-Azari, Milan Aluminum nuts and bolts with steel cotter pins, cardboard and printed paper. Depero Futurista is a Futurist self-portrait, an "autobiographical synthesis." It chronicles Depero's artistic development from 1913 through 1927. For this masterpiece of "free word" typography, Depero used signs and symbols for words and juxtaposed disparate font styles and sizes. Each page is composed with meticulous skill. Words leap from the page and whole paragraphs move sideways, spin in circles, and stretch forward in dart-like formation to accentuate the text's meaning.
