FIU researchers are focused on discovering and analyzing the links between human health and the environment. The faculty is multidisciplinary and includes physicians, chemists, toxicologists, cancer scientists, and other public health scientists. For instance, a new study, yet to be published by Drs. Roy and Felty, revealed a new paradigm that estrogen-mediated signaling through mitochondrial oxidants control the early stage of cell cycle progression. They have shown that estrogen-induced ROS transduce signals to the nucleus through the activation of redox sensitive NRF-1, AP-1 and CREB for the growth of estrogen dependent cells. Furthermore, these newly identified mechanisms of estrogen action in breast cancer cells suggest new targets for discovery of novel antioxidant-based drugs or new antioxidant gene therapies for the prevention and treatment of estrogen-dependent breast cancer.
Scholars in the School of Nursing believe that research is an integral component of professional nursing practice. Contemporary society is characterized by new discoveries in the arts, humanities, sciences, and technology, which can produce rapid changes. These rapid changes are associated with information that nurses must interpret through research. Research guides the professional nurse in the provision of holistic care through the nursing process. Nursing research leads to the refinement of theories that serve as a base for a substantive body of knowledge unique to nursing.
