Dr. Bruce Nissen is the Director of Research at the Florida International University Center for Labor Research and Studies.  He is also the Director of the Center’s research arm, the Research Institute on Social and Economic Policy (RISEP).  Dr. Nissen has published eight academic books as well as numerous articles in scholarly journals and books edited by others. He also produces research reports on a variety of labor-related topics.  Dr. Nissen is widely quoted in regional and national media regarding labor topics, and he has served on boards and commissions of both community organizations and government agencies.  His The State of Working Florida 2006 is published every Labor Day.  He has also produced numerous other research reports on topics such as living wage legislation, low-income workers, immigrant construction laborers and safety conditions, condominium workers, and more (many are available on the worldwide web at http://www.risep-fiu.org). 

Dr. Nissen is also a labor educator who has taught college credit Labor Studies classes and non-credit labor education classes since 1981.  He specializes in topics relating to labor-community coalition building, organizational power-building for worker organizations, and unions and immigrant workers. 

Dr. Nissen also utilizes his academic expertise in a wide variety of community and civic engagements.  He serves as an advisor to numerous community and labor-related organizations, and also has served on governmental boards concerning labor topics.
