PRACTICA IN MEDICAL TRANSLATION
SPT 4809 WEB-BASED

SPT 4809 will be offered as a fully web-based course based on the FIU WebCT platform. This allows considerable flexibility in scheduling of both student and faculty time, as there will be no classroom attendance required with the exception of the midterm and final exams.
Students are expected to have basic knowledge of Internet navigation using a browser program (Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer), and to have access to a standard word-processing program (Word for Windows, WordPerfect). No prior knowledge of the WebCT system is required. The majority of the grade will depend upon class participation in the class Web forums and message boards, timely submission of translation assignments, and the creation of a personal web page using simple tools.
Course Goals:
Provide an overview of the field of
medical translation via a wide range of selected materials, including clinical
reports, patient informational material, medical journal articles, and
medico-legal documents.
Focus on particular problem areas in
medical translation: false cognates, specialized terminology and abbreviations,
proper register.
Provide information regarding sources
available to medical translators in book form and on the Internet
Improve computer skills related to
document manipulation and formatting, including placement of accent marks, file
uploading, participation in bulletin board forum discussions.
