DRAFT PROPOSAL
Portuguese Translation and Interpretation Certificate Program
John B. Jensen, Director (Modern Languages)
Erik Camayd-Freixas (Modern Languages)
Theodore R. Young (Modern Languages)
This certificate program offers two18-credit tracks: one in translation and one in interpretation. It is intended to help prepare bilingual speakers to work professionally in the fields of Portuguese-English and English-Portuguese translation/interpretation by providing them with both the theoretical bases for their work and extensive practice. Because classes are small and most class work is individualized, the program is designed to meet the needs of both students with no prior experience and of working professionals.
Language Prerequisite : The level of language competence required for admission to the program is such that students, with rare exceptions, must have acquired both English and Portuguese through extensive residence in countries speaking those languages. Such bilingual students may need to enhance their formal knowledge of one of their languages through specific course work, upon advice from the program Director. It is not anticipated that students whose only contact with the second language has been in the classroom will be sufficiently prepared for the Certificate.
