Course Description:    This course is designed for students who have had little or no algebra. The major topics in this course are sets, real numbers and their properties, exponents and polynomials, linear equations and linear inequalities, as well as an introduction to factoring, rational expressions, radicals, and graphing in two variables.

 

Prerequisites):          MAT 0020C (if applicable as per placement result)

 

Instructional Contact Hours/Credits:    0 semester credits

 

Learning Objectives:   By the end of the course, students will be expected to comprehend:

1. Language and operation on sets

2. Operations on signed numbers

3. Solving linear equations and inequalities in one variable

4. Adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials

5. Factoring: greatest common factor, differences of squares, trinomials, and by grouping

6. Applications of factoring: solving equations and reducing algebraic fractions

7. Integer exponents: definitions, properties, and simplifying expressions with negative and zero exponents

8. Simplifying, multiplying, adding and subtracting square roots of monomial expressions

9. Graphing ordered pairs and lines; determining intercepts of lines

10. Applications of the above topics

                                Lial, Margaret L., and Hornsby, John. Beginning Algebra. 10th ed.  Pearson, 2007.

 

 

 

 

Instructional Methods:    
                                   
  Didactic instruction will be comprised of lecture, class assignments,
                                and a lab component
. Students will be administered a midterm and a final examination.

 

Exams

Exams may include multiple choice, graphing, problems, matching, and fill in the blanks.  Make-up exams are given at the discretion of the instructors, and only under extreme circumstances, such as incapacitating illness or death in the family. The student is responsible for providing the necessary written documentation for consideration.  There are no make-up exams during the week of finals.

Assessment Criteria and Methods of Evaluating Students:           
 

                    Successful completion of this course is based upon regular attendance,
                    participation in class activities,
                    and completion of both midterm and final exams. 
                                The passing score for this course is 70%.

Final Exam                    40%                             

Class Assignments        15%

Attendance                  15%

                                 100%

 

Your final course grade is reported as follows:

S = You passed the course.

U = You failed the course.
