GEAR UP South Dade Empowerment Zone

The GEAR UP Program of the Center for Diversity in Engineering and Computing at Florida International University’s goal is to better the level of education for traditionally under-represented students in high-needs schools in the Homestead area of Miami-Dade County. We have taken steps towards greater student achievement by offering supplemental education and classroom support to Homestead Middle School, ASPIRA Charter Middle School and Leisure City K-8 Center, as well as offering extracurricular activities and information on higher education in order to motivate students to set and attain high educational goals.GEAR UP has made substantial progress towards raising student achievement for the over 1200 students who participated in the 2005-2006 school year. Through continued programming we will make even further gains in the years to come.
