FIU Seeking Online Math Tutors

Florida International University is seeking the part time services of a tutoring coordinator and two additional tutors to provide online, live math tutoring to students enrolled in College Algebra, Finite Math, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus I & II. Through GATO and other FIU websites, students will be able to log in using their student number and receive free assistance from 6-midnight Monday through Thursday, 4 – 10 on Friday and Sunday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Live tutoring conducted through the web is real-time, interactive student academic support accessible to FIU students from their homes in the evenings when most students are doing homework and studying for exams. Students log onto the website and can interact with the tutor via telephone or chat room while the tutor is able to respond to questions via video and audio streaming using digital board technology to write solutions and explain concepts.

Online Tutoring Coordinator: Must meet eligibility requirements for adjunct teaching in the Math Department with a minimum of 18 graduate credits in math. The coordinator will divide time between team management, coordination with math faculty, and online tutoring, with compensation equivalent to adjunct instruction of two math classes per term ($4,200, approx. $20.00 per hour).

Online Tutors: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in each of the math areas listed above, be an articulate oral communicator, and comfortable with technology. Schedules will be developed during the time blocks listed above and will be approximately 16 hours per week at $10.00 per hour.

Training in online tutoring including use of the technology will be provided with pay. Direct questions and applications (resume and a letter of interest) to Kandell Bentley-Baker at kbbaker@fiu.edu. If you do not receive acknowledgement of your email by the next business day, you may call 305-348-6314.
