Why is the Department of
Mathematics at FIU enforcing prerequisites?
In order for the Department of Mathematics at FIU to effectively
accomplish its teaching mission with as little waste as possible and
with the resources available, it is critical that the department
strictly enforce the pre-requisites for all mathematics courses
beyond the most elementary. This, ultimately, is in the student's
best interest. Mathematical knowledge and skills are acquired and
mastered just as ordinary language is, bit by bit, through daily use
and practice. The breadth and depth of the mathematics curriculum
for most technical or scientific majors is such that it must be
digested in stages. Unfortunately, this means that a student cannot
expect to drop into the middle of a sequence of mathematics courses
and hope to succeed in the learning the technicalities that will be
encountered without having significant mastery of prior courses in
the sequence.

If PantherSoft has been unable to verify your having satisfied the
prerequisites for the Mathematics course for which you have
attempted to register and your prior university or college
transcript(s) can provide evidence of having acquired the requisite
knowledge, you may provide the Mathematics Department Chairperson,
or his designee, a copy of your transcript and an official course
description, to obtain a permission number to register for the
course. Note: If the room capacity, set by the Fire Marshal has been
reached, enrolling in the section may not be possible. There are no
guarantees here. Regardless, to smooth the way for future semesters,
you should see your academic advisor to make sure all of your
previous academic work has been included in the PantherSoft
database.

If PantherSoft has been unable to verify your having satisfied the
prerequisites for the Mathematics course for which you have
attempted to register and your prior university or college
transcript(s) do not provide evidence of having acquired the
requisite knowledge, you need to see your academic advisor in order
to be correctly placed within the part of your curriculum that
involves Mathematics Department courses. As part of this process, it
is important to diagnose any deficiencies precisely. In particular,
if you do not meet the prerequisites for Calculus I, we recommend
that you schedule and take the mathematics part of the Placement
Test which is administered by the University Testing Center. A link
to the University Testing Center Site is below:
University Testing
Center
You may, in fact, register for the test there online. Once you have
gotten the results of this diagnostic testing, you should then
register only for mathematics courses at the level indicated as
appropriate to your knowledge and skill level. Then, attending class
regularly and by making dilligent effort on assigned homework and
reading, you should have a reasonable chance of proceeding to master
the mathematics required for your curriculum.

NOTE: FOR FALL 2009 WE ARE NOT GIVING
OVERRIDES INTO FULL CLASSES UNTIL THE FIRST WEEK OF THE SEMESTER.
I have the prerequisites for the course for
which I'm registering, but PantherSoft won't let me register for the
section I want. The section is listed as closed. Is there anything
that can be done to get me in this section?
If PantherSoft indicates that you have satisfied the
prerequisites for the course for which you have attempted to
register, to facilitate getting a permission number to register for
a mathematics course section that currently is at or above its
enrollment capacity, you still must provide proof of having
satisfied the prerequisites to the person from whom you request the
permission number. Consequently, you must present either a printed
FIU grade report or a printed unofficial FIU transcript at the time
you make your request if you are a continuing FIU student. If you
are new to the university, a copy of your transcript that contains
the prerequisite course(s) and a copy of the course description or
syllabus will be needed. Currently, depending on the particular
course, the person to whom you must make the request is either the
Chairman of the Mathematics Department, his designee, or the
instructor assigned to teach the particular section. Understand
this: if the capacity of the room, as specified by the Fire
Marshall, has been reached, a permission number probably will not be
honored. Again, there are no guarantees.
[If a list of the courses that are to be handled by the Chairman or
his designee does not appear below, an inquiry should be made by
calling the Math Department Office. For courses not handled by the
Chairman, see the instructor assigned to teach the section of
interest. At this time, there is no uniform over-ride policy that is
supported and enforced by all instructors in the department.]
