Welcome Ms Audrey Bush and Ms Bernadette Bell. I asked Bernie for a short bio - Hello my name is Bernadette. Most people call me Bernie or Bern. I am originally from the island of Guam. I am so happy to be working here at the Mathematics Department, and I look forward to working with all of you. Thank you. Fond farewells to Sherline and Christina.

We would like to thank our staff members who are moving on - Atilda, Rebbecca, Debby and Cindy. Atilda Alvarido is now working in the college of Arts & Sciences Deans office as Executive Assistant, Cindy Silva Cruz is now working in the College of Medicine as Admin. Coordinator, Rebecca Fronczak is in Seattle Washington attending Graduate School. Debby Johnson writes:
I will be retiring and plan to travel. I have been at FIU since 1996 Registration, Financial Aid and I saved the best for last, Mathematics and Statistics. I am truly leaving here with mixed emotions. I am happy about my retirement, but sad to be leaving such a great department where I have had so many wonderful friends and colleagues. I am taking away many great memories of the time I have shared with you all.
We are happy to welcome the new crew. Rebbeccas (Senior Secretary, Math) replacement is: Ingrid Huysmans, Debbys (Senior Secretary, Stats) replacement is: Diana Cimadevilla, Cindys replacement is: Tiffany Weidman. We also expect Alejandro Martinez to join the department soon.
Ingrid writes: I have worked for the State of Florida for fourteen years, the last eight of which were as a Grants Specialist at FIUs Division of Research. I graduated from FIU with a B.A. degree in English last year and as such, I am very excited to have joined the College of Arts & Sciences. I warmly welcome the opportunity to join the Mathematics and Statistics Department and am confident that my Senior Secretary position will afford me the ability to learn new departmental functions. Learning new things is a habit I embrace and after various years of assisting professors university-wide with research proposal functions , I must say that I am excited to be acquiring new departmental skills and being instrumental in helping students directly. I look forward to assisting the department achieve its goals!
Tiffany writes:. My previous employer was Norwegian Cruise Line. I worked in the Reservations Department. I love Disney, Sports , and New York City. I am so happy to be here and be part of the Mathematics & Statistics team.

Former FIU Mathematics student Klaus Loewy is happy as a business intelligence analyst and sends his thanks.
Former student Tram Ta sends us a nice report from graduate school in Statistics at Wisconsin.
Several of our current students are moving on to strong graduate programs: Carlos Bajo and Luis Rodriguez go to UM, Luis Saumell to Notre Dame, Alejandro Ginory and Kafung Mok to Rutgers, Anudeep Kumar to George Washington U (see also the News tab on our main web page).
Holger Paas expects a Master's in Mathematical Finance at USC in Fall 2012. He writes that FIU's Math department has prepared him well, to compete with students from UCLA, NYU, Berkeley, etc, some of them already with PhDs. See Holger's message.
Welcome to Cinthya (Cindy) Silva-Cruz, our newest Secretary. She is a recent transplant from New York.
Prof. Richard Rubin has retired after 35 years at FIU. We had a party June 29th at the Macaroni Grill. Congratulations, Richard !

The Faculty allegedly redeemed their honor by defeating the Students in this year's annual soccer match. The score is under dispute, but will be posted here, as soon as this is settled [still waiting].
Yenisei Mogena, Office Assistant since 2006, is leaving us approx May 20.

Congratulations to Anca Vacarescu, an alumnus who is finishing her PhD in Math at Stanford. She has been offered a position with a major financial firm in London, UK.
Our graduate student Adam Pelea has apparently solved a difficult combinatorial problem in protein-folding posed by Prof Gerstman in the FIU Physics department.
Congratulations to Math major Raul Jarquin, who has just accepted a job at Citigroup in Fort Lauderdale as a business analyst.
Congratulations to those who have recently retired or moved on; David, Diana, Martha, Isabel, Yolanda [10000 pardons for any omissions - please correct us!].
We have a new Administrative Assistant, Atilda Martinez. We also have some new window offices for faculty.
